MEAGS organized sessions at the annual congress of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, Lagos, Nigeria

MEACO, through the Middle East Africa Glaucoma Society (MEAGS), sponsored three speakers to participate at the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria Annual Congress, which was held from 29 September - 1 October 2012 in Lagos. The speakers are Prof. Moustafa Nassar (Egypt), Dr. Randa Zazaa (Egypt) and Prof. Andries Stulting (South Africa).

Africa Glaucoma Meeting Adopts Kampala Resolution

Africa Glaucoma experts adopt resolution and action points.

A Public Health Control of Glaucoma visual loss meeting was organized by PBU in collaboration with IAPB-Africa and MEACO. It held in Kampala Uganda, from 17 - 18 April 2012. The meeting came up with a resolution and action points towards control of the needleless visual loss from Glaucoma in the Africa continent. These were a product of 2 days discussions, deliberations and brain storming among over 30 experts in Glaucoma, eye care program, governmental and non-governmental organizations, training institutions, professional bodies, patients group in the region etc. Please find the content of the resolution and the "Actionables" decided at the meeting.

The meeting was funded by the Islamic Development Bank and IMPACT-EMR.


2011 MEAGS Participations

  • 13 - 14 October 2011 (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia): MEAGS contributed in a session at the annual meeting of the Ophthalmological Society of Eastern Africa OSEA).
  • 26 September – 6 October 2011 (Bamako, Mali): MEAGS participated in the African Institute for Tropical ophthalmology (IOTA) and presented a session entitled “Glaucoma challenges in Africa”. During this event, MEAGs also joinlty organized a 2-week glaucoma course and hands-on training on “Glaucoma theoretical in trabeculectomy” with Nadi El-Basar.
  • 1 - 2 July 2011 (Nouakchott, Mauritania): MEAGS participated at the 2nd Congress of Mauritanian Ophthalmological Society at Tfeila hotel in Nouakchott. It was well-attended by ophthalmologists from Algeria, Burkina Fasso, Guinea Conakry, Mauritania, Morocco, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Syria and Tunisia.
  • 29 June - 2 July 2011 (Paris, France): MEAGS organized a symposia at the World Glaucoma Congress.
  • 3 - 4 June 2011 (Tunis, Tunisia): The 14th International course of the Nadi Bassar was held in Gammarth-Tunis, in collaboration with the Alexandria University, MEACO, MEAGS, MEARVS and the Tunisian Society of Ophthalmology. The glaucoma symposium which was organized by MEAGS was a great success with about 200 attendees. A special mention to the participation of Dr Robert Ritch, which was highly appreciated.
